I was a little scared, but when I heard this I got my confidence back. To make a contest ride a feller has got to come out of that chute with his spurs in the horse's shoulder and keep spurring all the time. He has to keep that right hand up so it don't touch the saddle anywhere.

All of a sudden I was wishing I had more money to bet. Hell, there had been plenty of times I couldn't ride the old bastard pulling all the leather there was on the saddle.

They got the rigging ready, and Sowbelly crawled up over the chute and got set in the saddle. He tested the length of the rein to be sure it wasn't so short he would get pulled off over the horse's head when it went down. If it was too long he wouldn't have any control either. That rein had to be just right.

When he was all set, Sowbelly looked around grinning and said, "Turn this plow horse out of here."
